Who We Are!

The Moslah Shrine Center Bedouins were chartered in 1946. The Bedouins were founded to maintain an Oriental Band symbolic of the tribe of Bedouins who, in ancient times, seized to Kaaba or the sanctuary at Mecca and proclaimed themselves its guardians. The Bedouins are a performing Unit regularly identified in their distinguishing flowing robes at parades and local events. Theirs is the public idea of the Shrine's "Sons of the Desert" identity. The Bedouins' performance instruments include a number of percussion pieces ranging from tambourines to bass drums and the rolling Big Bertha, and are accompanied by the musettes, a simple to learn reed instrument. Instruments, instruction and parade or competition uniforms (robes) are provided for all band members. The Bedouins serve Moslah Temple by serving as the official Greeters of Moslah Shrine Center at all Shrine functions. Personal membership requirements include annual dues and assessments of $325 (which covers most major social events and incidentals), minimal uniform requirements and regular attendance at monthly meetings and band practices.

You are looking at what we think is the best unit that Moslah has to offer! That's why there are so many of us! We are the Oriental Band, specializing in fun, fellowship, good music and good times. We are the guys that you see dressed in Arab clothes, playing Arabic music and always having fun.

Now we all don't know how to read music and some of us have never played anything harder than a radio before we joined. If you can play a musical instrument, that is great and we need you in our band, but if you can't, we still want you. We like to start new members out on the horn or musette, but for those who don’t fit reed instruments we can always find something else. Of course, we always need guys to carry flags and banners and function as actors. We furnish you (no cost) with one of the instruments as well as the uniforms which we wear when we perform. We are a walking band that loves to show off our stuff in parades such as Parade of Lights, Fourth of July, etc. and we have a trailer for the longer parades and events. How can we describe some of the fun that we have? Easy!

We have lots of band practices, Texas Shrine Association mid winter meetings, Oriental Band competition, Imperial Shrine competition, parades, picnics, golfing, dove hunts, numerous parties (formal and informal), and some stuff I can't think of right now. However, the best thing about being a member of the Oriental band is the FELLOWSHIP. Really, we have fun any time we can find a reason to get together. Noble or lady, you will find that we have a bunch of friendly folks that enjoy a good time and the way we do it is to bring in others that also want to enjoy their Shrine membership and experience the good life. We hold our business meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at the Masonic Temple on 1100 Henderson Street, starting at 7:00 PM and they usually last one hour. Our practices are usually also held at Moslah Shrine Center in the band room, lasting about one hour. You may either store your instrument there or take it home with you to practice. We don't hold meetings during the two months of July and August. We have several classes of membership but the primary ones offered to new members are Active and Social. Active members must be a performing member of the band and they incur an obligation to attend all meetings and practices. Social members may attend all meetings but must attend at least one per quarter. We are a family oriented unit; we are also the largest unit in Moslah and have loads of fun. Try us, you'll like what we do!
